A Timely Reminder: Dwell in Unity A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the LCS Retreat in June

Though the LCS Retreat in Batam in June 2024 has concluded, its powerful theme — “Dwell in Unity” — should continue to inspire and guide our Christian lives.

Hopefully, this reflection, while belated, does remind us of the retreat’s enduring message.

God’s power is made perfect in our weaknesses

Being in the retreat’s sub-committee, I had a unique vantage point from which to observe both the heartwarming fellowship and the often-chaotic administrative work.

The retreat brought together various Lutheran congregations in Singapore, and while it was a joy to see so many familiar and fresh faces, the behind-the-scenes coordination presented its challenges. Last-minute changes to the registration list and logistical issues with accommodation were just some of the hurdles we faced. Miscommunications often led to confusion, requiring us to constantly juggle tasks to ensure everyone received accurate information. Despite these obstacles, we worked tirelessly to ensure that all participants settled in comfortably and enjoyed the retreat. It was a continuous effort to address each issue as it arose, but seeing everyone finally relax and engage in the retreat made all the hard work worthwhile.

There were moments when the stress and frustration seemed overwhelming. Yet, in the midst of this flurry, I was reminded of an important truth: God’s power is made perfect in our weaknesses.

God’s grace and provision

Throughout the retreat, I witnessed countless examples of God’s grace and provision. Despite the initial registration chaos, everyone arrived at the destination safely. Volunteers from the various congregations stepped up to support one another, often without even being asked. God brought together people with willing hearts to serve in areas like worship, children’s programs, and games.

One particularly memorable moment occurred during a worship session. As we sang “One Voice” together in harmony, the presence of God could be felt throughout the hall. 340 people from different congregations came together to worship Him. It struck me that despite the administrative challenges and differing opinions on matters, God had gathered us together for a purpose far greater than our plans. The issues we faced paled in comparison to the spiritual connections and transformations taking place.

LCS Congregations United

Not only was the theme of “Dwell in Unity” evident in the conduct of fellow believers, but it was also reflected in the testimonies shared by participants. During our session discussions, I had the opportunity to hear from other retreaters their experiences in other Lutheran congregations. I noted the similarities and love present among church members in our pioneer generation.

Even at the closing segment of the retreat, many shared their personal thanksgivings, renewed faith, and a deeper sense of community. These testimonies were a powerful reminder that God works through our imperfections and uses our efforts, however flawed, to accomplish His divine purposes.

Grateful to serve

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and witness God’s hand at work. The administrative challenges taught me patience, reliance on God, and the importance of teamwork. More importantly, they highlighted that God’s presence is not dependent on our perfection but on His perfect love and grace.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the LCS main committee, JCC sub-committee, and various JCC members who stepped in to help make this retreat a success. I also want to express my gratitude to the JCC family for their cooperation and flexibility in adapting to the multiple changes.

Lastly, I want to thank my better half and fellow co-bus captain, Clement Lim, who provided invaluable support behind the scenes for a year during the planning and execution of the retreat.

A Call to Unity and Service: Lessons from the Retreat

In conclusion, this retreat was a testament to the fact that God’s blessings are not limited by our messes. Instead, He often uses our challenges to reveal His faithfulness and power. As we move forward, let us carry this lesson with us, trusting that in every mess, there is a blessing waiting to be uncovered.

May we, as one church, continue to grow in the Lord, not focusing on each other’s weaknesses but learning to dwell in unity, accepting one another’s uniqueness just as the Lord has created us.

May we also continue to see and celebrate God’s blessings in all circumstances, knowing that He is always with us, guiding and providing, even amidst life’s chaos. God bless!
