Halloween or Reformation: A Choice for Christians

What’s So Special About October 31st?

When asked about October 31st, some people will immediately think of Halloween, a festive occasion filled with costumes, candy, and spooky decorations. However, for Christians, this day holds a deeper significance.

The Reformation: A Pivotal Moment

October 31st also marks the anniversary of the Reformation, a pivotal event in Christian history. On this day in 1517, Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of Wittenberg Church, challenging the practices and doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. This bold act sparked a religious revolution that would reshape Christianity for centuries to come.

The Abuse of Indulgences

One of the key issues that Luther addressed was the sale of indulgences, certificates that promised a reduction in time spent in purgatory after death. The Roman Catholic Church had used indulgences as a means of raising funds, but Luther argued that salvation was not earned through good works or the purchase of indulgences, but rather through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Luther’s Challenge

Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses challenged the authority of the Catholic Church and its corrupt practices. His bold stance sparked a religious movement that led to the formation of Protestant denominations, such as Lutheranism, Calvinism, and Anglicanism.

The Importance of the Reformation

The Reformation was a catalyst for change in Western civilization, fostering a greater emphasis on individual conscience, biblical literacy, and the role of the laity in the church.

A Call to Reflection

As Christians, we should reflect on the significance of the Reformation and the courageous individuals who risked their lives to restore the purity of the gospel. We can be inspired by their example and strive to live lives that are pleasing to God.

LCS Celebrates Reformation Day

Join the Lutheran Church in Singapore (LCS) as we commemorate Reformation Day on 31 October 2024 at 7:15 pm. The service will be held at the sanctuary of Yishun Christian Church (Lutheran).

A fellowship dinner will precede the service, starting at 6:00 pm. Registration for the dinner ends on 20th October. As of writing, more than 100 members from all Lutheran congregations have registered their attendance to celebrate this significant milestone in Christian history.

Choose Reformation

While Halloween may be a popular celebration for those seeking thrills and entertainment that delve into the macabre and supernatural, it lacks the spiritual depth and historical significance of the Reformation. By choosing to celebrate Reformation Day, we can honour the memory of the reformers and reaffirm our commitment to the Christian faith.

Let us turn away from the shadows of Halloween and embrace the radiant light of the Reformation.
