BADVANGERS ASSEMBLE – CNY Celebration by Our Badminton Players

I had a wonderful time as a guest at the “Badvangers Assemble” Chinese New Year celebration at JCC on Sunday, February 9th.
I was immediately intrigued by the name, “Badvangers.” It’s a clever and memorable name, likely a twist to a play on words combining “badminton” and “avengers.” It perfectly captures the spirit of these badminton players who gather regularly at JCC for fun and fellowship, while also hinting at their competitive edge and skill on the court – a force to be reckoned with in the world of shuttlecocks and smashes.
What is a CNY celebration if it does not begin with “Lo Hei”, a tossing of “Yusheng” as we come together to strengthen relationship in the badminton family?
Gathered around three tables, as each ingredient was added to the colourful mix, we shared relevant scriptural blessings; and with each toss, apart from the cheerful feeling of togetherness, we shared a common wish for God’s abundant blessings in the new year, that we would abound in every good work. (2 Cor 9:8)
Following the festive “Lo Hei” and a delicious feast of extra-large pizza, sides, and drinks, we gathered in a circle for a time of sharing.
The fun continued with a hilarious three-part game: See (Act it out), Feel (Draw it out), Hear (Fill it up).
In the first part, players formed three teams and lined up. The first player in each line was shown a picture and had to act it out for the second player, who then passed the message down the line through their own acting. This continued until the last player, who had to guess what the picture was.
The second part was similar, but instead of acting, players drew the picture on a piece of paper against the back of the person in front of them. Each successive player used their sensory perception to decipher the drawing, with the final player guessing the original picture.
The third part involved music. A song was played, and each team had to identify the missing lyrics.
The winning team earned the first pick of angpows (containing real cash!) hanging on a badminton net. Graciously, even the other teams had their chance to choose angpows. Everyone went home with a little extra treasure, but more importantly … they went home with hearts full of joy, laughter, and the spirit of fellowship.
As a memento of the day, each person also took home a memorable keychain featuring a beautifully-crafted badminton racket and shuttlecock – a small token to remind them of the fun we shared. It was a reminder that true riches aren’t just material, but are found in community, in the fun we share, and in the love we have for one another. And as we celebrated this CNY together, we were grateful for the blessings of friendship and the opportunity to share God’s love in such a playful and memorable way.
