Beyond the Empty Tomb: The Triumph of the Risen Christ

Easter 2025 is around the corner! From the journey to the Cross during the Lenten Season, the Messiah’s death on Good Friday marked a pivotal moment. However, the subsequent Sunday brought a transformation that would reshape the course of history and the destiny of the human race. As Easter Day dawns, what is the true essence of our anticipation?
a) The Great Terror of the Tomb
The first Easter Sunday was not a day of celebration, but one shrouded in fear and profound sadness. Gloom permeated the atmosphere, reflecting the despair in the hearts of Jesus’ followers.
Tombs, by their very nature, are places we usually avoid. For the disciples of Jesus, the recent trauma of Jesus’ suffering was still raw. While some women bravely made their way to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices, the disciples remained hidden, gripped by fear of arrest. A heavy question lingered in their minds: “Is this truly the end?” Their hearts were broken. Even the discovery of an empty tomb initially brought no solace, leaving them lost and bewildered.
This initial encounter with emptiness mirrors a challenge we face even today – the temptation to see the tomb as merely a final resting place, nothing more than that. The passage of two millennia might lead some to feel disconnected from the great significance of the historical event.
b) The Great Joy Out of the Tomb
Yet, the turning point that changed the course of human history—including the lives of the disciples—came out of the tomb.
Mary Magdalene, overcome with grief, experienced a life-altering encounter when Jesus appeared to her. This meeting with the living Christ (John 20:16–23) transformed her sorrow into overwhelming joy. Subsequently, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples, offering reassurance to the doubting Thomas and extending forgiveness and restoration to Peter, who had previously denied him three times.
Today, each of us is invited to this same transformative experience – to encounter the living Christ. Our focus should not remain on the empty tomb but shift to the risen Saviour. The power of Christ’s resurrection is not confined to the past; it is a living force capable of empowering us to make a tangible difference in our own lives, within our families, and in the broader society.
Consider the powerful simplicity of the following widely circulated illustration.
Recently a man was converted to Christ. When someone asked him why he had become a Christian, he answered:
“Suppose you were going down a road when suddenly it forked in two directions, you didn’t know which way to take. There at the fork in the road you could see two persons, one dead and one alive. Of which one would you inquire the way? My reason for embracing the Christian faith is this undeniable truth: Jesus Christ is alive!”
Easter is not about the absence of a body, but the presence of the risen Christ. It is the profound truth of the resurrection that transforms despair into hope, fear into courage, and death into life. As we celebrate Easter, may we all experience the living power of the resurrected Lord in our lives.
