Futsal: A Game of Friendship

Every few weeks, members of Jurong Christian Church (JCC) and friends gather for a regular friendly futsal game at ActiveSG Jurong East Sports Centre. For August, we had the game twice, on the 10th and 31st of the month. Here, I have compiled the views from some of the players.

  • Cheng Kiat shared that the group played in different teams, with the members rotated to ensure everyone had a chance to play. The players had varying skill levels, but everyone was very accepting of each other despite the differences.

Aside from the games and friendly competition, the group also had good conversations and a fantastic time of fellowship. Cheng Kiat noted that football is a team game where everyone must support each other to have the best chance of victory. Similarly, he believes the Christian journey is also a team effort that can be best experienced by supporting one another.

  • For Eason, the group’s regular futsal sessions are always something to look forward to. Held about once every three weeks, the gatherings were a time to unwind, get active, and enjoy each other’s company.

The matches were fast-paced yet lighthearted, with everyone taking turns and cheering each other on. Eason shared that what stood out most wasn’t the goals scored, but the fellowship—laughing, encouraging one another, and growing closer as a church family through sport. Futsal has become a simple but meaningful way for the group to strengthen both their friendships and their faith, one kick at a time.

  • Sisters Gianella and Gildabella initially hesitated to join the church’s futsal game. In the past, they had not enjoyed the sport while playing in school, finding it a struggle with all the running and coordination it required. When invited by Hartley for this futsal event, they brought two friends along for support.

To their surprise, the futsal experience wasn’t awkward at all. Everyone was welcoming. The group gave them a chance to step out of their comfort zones, making sure everyone had fair opportunities to play and get the ball. They were even commended for trying.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and the sisters would love to continue joining them in the future.

In JCC, Futsal has become a fun way for everyone to relax, get some exercise, and get to know each other better outside of church. Everyone is welcome, no matter their skill level.
