Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. – Galatians 6:10 (NIV)
In God’s family, no one should be left alone to fend for themselves. We are all members of one body – The Body of Christ. God commands us to love Him and to love our neighbours as ourselves. With faith, love and charity as the defining hallmarks of our manifested Christian living, no one should turn a blind eye to anyone in need. It is more blessed to give than to receive. No one is too poor to give time, resources, love, encouragement or just a listening ear. Faith without works is dead.
We must demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways so that others can see our good works and give glory to our Father in heaven. It is also to demonstrate love for one another as children of God. For this is to be the distinguishing mark of Christians as commanded by our Lord Jesus.
What does God say about this?
If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
1 Corinthians 12:26 (NIV)
Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that? So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.
James 2:15-17 (NIV)
Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
2 Corinthians 1:4 (NIV)
What does this mean for practical living?
As we go about our daily routines, we can look out for opportunities to help those in need, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ. If you belong to a Cell Group or Care Group (CG) in church, that is a great place to start. As CG members share their life situations with one another, look out for opportunities to meet their needs. Start by praying for one another, check-in with them during the week via phone calls, social media messages or house visits.
In the larger context of the church, respond to calls for help when announcements are made or when issues are presented in newsletters, bulletins, notice boards or social media platforms. God does not require each of us to deal with every problem. When you encounter such needs, simply pray and ask God if there is something that you can do about it and follow His bidding. Remember what our Lord Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice.” When you know in your heart that you can and ought to do something to help, that is the voice of God prompting you. Do not harden your heart.
Reflect and respond to God’s Word
- Recall a situation when someone had helped or journeyed with you by just being present. How did you feel?
- Why is it important to look out for the interests of others, especially in the family of believers?
- How have you positioned yourself to be of ready help to those in need?
