Retro Rewind: Faith, Fun and Fellowship (Young Adult Ministry Jam Session)

What happens when you mix vintage games, old-school vibes, and great company from church? You get one of the most fun and memorable events we’ve had—our YAMJAM Retro Games Party, held at the cozy and vibrant Bras Basah Room 2F event space!

As part of the planning committee, I got to experience the full process, from brainstorming themes and logistics, to preparing decorations and setting up the monitor and consoles for the Nintendo Switch games. What made it a blessing was how everyone played their part. Our team leader, Nat, did an amazing job bringing out the best in each of us. He gave us the freedom to choose roles we were comfortable with and trusted us to do what we felt was best. By aligning our strengths with the planning needs, everyone could contribute meaningfully to the event’s success.

Helping to plan this event reminded me how important community is. There was something really special about watching our friends come together, enjoy the games, and just be present. It wasn’t just about playing games; it was about creating space for connection, joy, and shared memories. Even for those who weren’t into board games or video games, they still found meaningful ways to connect. Some gathered around the snack table, bonding over retro treats like iced gem biscuits and Polar snack crackers, while others teamed up to tackle the tricky riddles in our scavenger hunt side quest—sparking laughter, teamwork, and some light-hearted frustration! It was heartening to see that no matter the activity, everyone found a way to be part of the fun and community.

One of the highlights was the Retro Games Trivia segment, where participants had to guess the game by looking at a zoomed-in image of a classic game or TV show. It was both hilarious and impressive to see how quickly some could recognize even the most pixelated screenshots! What made it extra special was seeing people across ages enthusiastically joining in to answer the questions. The trivia became a fun way to bridge generations and spark nostalgic conversations.

Personally, I felt really encouraged by the turnout and the positive vibes throughout the entire time. Seeing people laugh, bond, and even open up through something as simple as a game reminded me that ministry can happen through fun too. All in all, our YAMJAM Retro Games Party was more than just a nostalgic throwback. It was a celebration of friendship, fellowship, and God’s joy in our community. I hope events like these continue to draw us closer, not just to each other, but also to the heart of what church is about: love, hospitality, and shared life.
