Dialect CG Celebrates CNY

As it was the CNY season, the Dialect Cell Group held a CNY-themed gathering on Thursday, February 6th. The event began with Hokkien songs set to traditional CNY melodies but featuring Christian lyrics.

The song leader was a rookie learning the ropes of song leading for the first time. She will eventually be inducted as a Worship Leader for the Dialect Service when she is ready. New people are desperately needed in the Dialect Ministry.

The games sequence was based on the ingredients that make up the “Lo Hei” platter and their references to auspicious meanings in Chinese. The elders were to name an ingredient and say why it was part of the ingredients of the “Lo Hei” dish. The next game was a sort of musical chairs but played with 2 mandarin oranges being passed around in opposite directions. The person left holding both oranges had to perform a forfeit, such as singing a CNY song or sharing a CNY blessing.

The pièce de résistance of the celebration was, of course, the “Lo Hei” which was shared by all the elders enthusiastically. This delightful dish was complemented by a special Hakka CNY dish prepared by Seline and numerous CNY treats brought by other attendees.

Those serving in the Dialect Ministry should be aware that it is customary for some of the aunties to hand out angpows. While not to be expected, it would be impolite to refuse them if offered. Accept them graciously and with thanks.
