National Council of Churches of Singapore

Dear Members and Friends of NCCS,

I have been prayerfully reflecting on what the future will bring and the burden I feel for the Body of Christ in Singapore.  Unity in the church is core to NCCS and also weighs heavily on my heart.  My hope is that we may bring more churches to be part of NCCS, that Singapore may see the Body of Christ united as one and not competing for superiority, resources and more.

1 Corinthians 12:24b-26 says, “But God has put the body together, giving greater honour to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.  If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it.”

When a church is portrayed negatively in the media, all Christians suffer for it.  Our reactions should never be to throw stones but to look for healing and reconciliation.  If a member of the body of Christ is in need, we are also called on to strengthen and support that member.

We acknowledge that each member is different and as such, every member of NCCS determines its own policy and action.  A difference in doctrine and/or policy does not need to be a cause for contention, but it can be a point for celebration.  It ensures healthy debate and a continual need to seek the Lord for revelation.

It is a great relief that 1 Corinthians 12:18-20 tells us that “God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.  If they were all one part, where would the body be?  As it is, there are many parts, but one body.”

Being united does not mean that we have to be the same, in fact, God is the one who has made us different, and we are to learn how to rejoice and celebrate these differences.  My hope is that the unity that we embody will be a witness of our faith in Jesus Christ, bringing more to know God as their personal Lord and Saviour.

Yours in Christ,

Bishop Philip Lim | President
