“Feathers of Faith” Badminton Competition – Building Community On and Off the Court

Jurong Christian Church (JCC) fosters a vibrant badminton club as part of its “Goshen Initiatives,” which are dedicated community outreach efforts. This club extends a warm welcome to friends and neighbours, not just church members, inviting everyone to join their regular sessions and experience fellowship through sport.

The Badminton Committee

In early May, an exciting idea took flight among the badminton players: to host JCC’s first-ever internal Badminton Competition. The vision was clear ‒ to cultivate joy, strengthen connections, and deepen faith within the JCC badminton community. What started as a casual conversation quickly blossomed into a significant event.

A particularly heartening moment during the planning stage was when a player, not yet a JCC member, volunteered to join the competition committee. This simple act of inclusion underscored the welcoming nature of the badminton club and served as a powerful reminder of God’s continuous work in drawing people together. The collaborative spirit, with each person contributing their unique talents and energy, was a testament to His faithfulness in bringing the event to fruition.

After weeks of preparation, the JCC Badminton Competition came to life on Sunday, 29th June 2025. From afternoon until late evening, our courts buzzed with laughter, cheers, and friendly competition. We intentionally randomized partner assignments to encourage everyone to step out of their comfort zones, meet new people, and level the playing field. This approach worked beautifully, with the round-robin format ensuring ample court time and numerous opportunities for everyone to connect.

To symbolize the unity and purpose behind the day, we even had shirts printed with the words “Feathers of Faith.” The event culminated in a post-game barbecue ‒ a spread of delicious grilled food, great company, and hearts full of gratitude.

Looking back, the entire experience was hectic, but incredibly worthwhile. More than just a sporting event, it was a testament to how God brings people together and build community. We are truly thankful for everyone who played a part, and for the gentle ways God continues to move in our midst.

From the Courts to the Grill

Having been a part of this group for nearly two years, I decided to join the competition, playing in the combined doubles category. The randomized pairings ensured each team was evenly matched in skill level, which made the games even more enjoyable and competitive.

We never thought much about our chances of winning over better players. Nevertheless, my partner, Uncle Daniel, and I somehow managed to defy expectations, battling our way through the rounds and impressively snagging 4th place out of 12 pairs. Some of my cell group members even showed up to support us ‒ mostly to cheer and, naturally, to mock my mistakes. Fun times!

The doubles segment finally wrapped up, and I was ready to feast—only to be informed that I had also been entered into the singles competition. Even though I lost in the first round, I like to believe that I graciously let my opponent win so that I could make a swift escape and enjoy the food.

The meal itself was a delicious barbecue, lovingly prepared by those who weren’t playing, allowing us exhausted players to dig in without delay. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made the whole event feel even warmer and more welcoming.

As the night came to a close, some of us continued the fellowship with a supper trip to a nearby coffeeshop. There, we spent an extra hour chatting and bonding over food, further cementing the connections made on the court. All in all, the event provided invaluable time to connect with one another and build closer relationships—nurturing a foundation that I truly hope will lead us toward a deeper shared spiritual bond in Christ.
