A Seed of Faith Blossoms: A Baptism Story

Hope and joy overflowed as we watched the baptismal water trickle down the forehead of my mother, Mdm Chia Ah Nee, as Deacon Nathan pronounced the words, “I baptise you. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Though my daughter Hannah was serving on a mission ship (OM), the rest of us – Susan (my wife), Diana (my daughter), and I – were present for this momentous occasion at home on the warm Friday night of April 5th, 2024.

The words of 1 Peter 3:21 resonated with us all: “This water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God.”

Despite battling dementia, a newfound serenity graced Mdm Chia’s face. However, this beautiful event followed a long and patient path.

Many years ago, witnessing the home baptism of Deacon Peter Cheong’s mother sparked a desire within me to pray for my mother’s salvation. As dementia slowly took hold on her, my role as her caregiver intensified this yearning for her to find spiritual grounding. With unwavering faith in God’s timing and grace, I brought her to my home, allowing her to participate in Paya Lebar Methodist Church’s Teochew sermons online through their Hybrid Zoom program.

Words cannot express my gratitude for the unwavering love and support of my family, especially my mother-in-law, Madam Kwa. The JCC Dialect Ministry, particularly Deacon Peter, a close friend of my mother, played a pivotal role in making this day possible. Their dedication brought immense comfort.

Deacon Nathan and Florence also offered invaluable guidance and prayers in preparation for the baptism.

Witnessing this beautiful testament to God’s grace reaffirmed the powerful truth: “With God, all things are possible!” (Matthew 19:26). To Him be the glory, Hallelujah!

My mother embraced the Lord’s saving grace with such joy. The home baptism by sprinkling on April 5th, 2024, was truly blessed. Seeing her baptized filled us all with immense joy and reaffirmed that God’s strength truly resides within us.
