NCCS November 2024 E-Newsletter

Dear Members and Friends of NCCS,

On 9 November, during the monthly children’s mass at St Joseph’s Church in Upper Bukit Timah Road, a man stabbed Father Christopher Lee when he was serving Holy Communion.  Fortunately, the Archdiocesan Emergency Response team and members of the congregation intervened and restrained the assailant who has since been charged in court.  Fr Christopher has been discharged from hospital and is recovering from his injuries.

NCCS President, Bishop Lu Guan Hoe expressed his concern and support in a letter to Cardinal William Goh, head of the Roman Catholic Church in Singapore on same day of the incident (see NCCS letter LINK).  And while there is no evidence to suggest that it was a religiously motivated attack, we are aware that many of our churches already have in place special teams of volunteers and staff to be on the lookout for suspicious persons during worship services.

May our churches always be welcoming to anyone who wishes to worship and pray, and at the same time ensure the safety of the congregation as best as we can.

In His Service,

Rev Dr Ngoei Foong Nghian | General Secretary

National Council of Churches of Singapore
